Karate is a system of martial arts that focuses primarily on striking techniques for self-protection. It originated from the martial arts of Okinawa at a time when Chinese martial arts became a major influence of the local fighting systems. In the later part of the 19th and early 20th centuries it was imported to mainland Japan where it was modified into an art that followed the customs of the established arts already in place. When karate was adapted to fit in with this mainland Japanese paradigm it went through a major change in philosophy concerning the effectiveness and goals of practice. This change helped in the sense it allowed karate to become more widely known however it did create a divide so far as the realistic practice of self-defense in other cultures. At Endurance Martial Arts we look to that golden age when Okinawan martial arts were blending with the southern Chinese systems to form a dynamic system of martial arts. Adapting these original practices into the modern western world gives us the ability to learn from the past while adapting to the modern environment.
